Melukote and Shravanabelagola in one day from Bangalore
This is the rare yatra out of Bangalore that genuinely fits in a day, and the one we recommend to groups doing their first temple trip together. Both sites are within 150 km, the roads are good the whole way, and there is no interstate permit. What it does demand is legs. Shravanabelagola's Bahubali statue sits at the top of 614 rock-cut steps in the open sun, and Melukote's Yoga Narasimha temple is another climb above the town. If your group includes anyone who cannot manage stairs, plan which of the two they will sit out.

Itinerary options
One-day loop
Bangalore → Shravanabelagola → Melukote → Bangalore
05:30 departure to beat the heat on the rock. Shravanabelagola by 08:30, Bahubali steps before the sun is high, Chandragiri temples at the base. Lunch at Channarayapatna. Melukote by 14:30 for Cheluvanarayana Swamy and the Yoga Narasimha climb, then Kalyani tank. Optional Tonnur lake at sunset. Back in Bangalore by 21:00.
Two-day version
Add Srirangapatna and Ranganathittu
Groups with children usually prefer this: overnight at Mysore, adding Srirangapatna, Ranganathittu bird sanctuary and Tipu's summer palace. Turns a hard one-day push into an easy weekend.
Recommended vehicles
Ertiga
The smallest vehicle on this site, and the entry point for group travel. Below six people a sedan is cheaper; at six the Ertiga is the only vehicle where nobody sits sideways.
Tempo Traveller 12
The best cost per person of anything on this site. If the group is eight or more and the budget matters more than recliner seats, this is the answer.
Tempo Traveller 17
The workhorse for temple groups and school excursions. Seventeen seats at the lowest per-head cost available anywhere in the fleet.
Mini Bus
For groups above seventeen, where splitting into two Tempo Travellers costs more and separates the party.
Questions we get asked
Is this really possible in one day from Bangalore?
Yes, and it is one of the few on this site that is. Total driving is about 320 km on good roads. The constraint is heat on the Shravanabelagola rock, not distance, which is why we push for a 05:30 departure.
Can elderly passengers manage the 614 steps?
Many cannot, and there is no shame in it — the rock is bare, barefoot and hot. Palanquin carriers work the base of the hill for a negotiated fee. Alternatively they can visit the Chandragiri temples at ground level while the rest of the group climbs.
Will a mini bus get up to Melukote?
To the town, yes. The final approach to the hilltop Yoga Narasimha temple is narrow and steep, and a 25 seater will park lower down than a Tempo Traveller would. For a group above seventeen doing both sites, we usually suggest two Tempo Travellers over one mini bus.
Best month for this trip?
November to February. The Shravanabelagola rock is genuinely punishing on bare feet from March to May, and the steps are slippery in heavy rain.
One last thing
A note that saves groups an argument at the base of the hill: leave footwear in the vehicle rather than at the temple counter, and carry a pair of socks. The rock is hot, the queue is slow, and socks are permitted on the steps at Shravanabelagola even though shoes are not.
