Pilgrimage & Yatra

Sringeri, Horanadu and Kalasa yatra from Bangalore

The Sringeri circuit is the most scenic yatra out of Bangalore and the one where the vehicle choice matters most. The route climbs through Chikmagalur coffee country into the Malnad hills, and the roads between Sringeri, Horanadu and Kalasa are narrow, wet for much of the year, and lined with overhanging growth. A seventeen-seater will make it, but a thirteen-seater Urbania or a twelve-seater Tempo Traveller moves through those stretches noticeably faster. Horanadu also serves annadana and provides free accommodation, which changes how a group budgets the trip.

Questions we get asked

Will a 17 seater Tempo Traveller manage the Sringeri to Horanadu road?

It will, and we run it. But the road is narrow with blind curves and overhanging branches, and a 17 seater has to slow for oncoming traffic more often. If your group is thirteen or fewer, the 13 seater Urbania or the 12 seater Tempo Traveller will do the same circuit noticeably faster and more comfortably.

Is accommodation really free at Horanadu?

The temple runs free and nominal-charge guest rooms, and serves free meals to all visitors. Rooms are basic and cannot be relied on for a large group at short notice, so book ahead or plan a paid stay in Sringeri as backup.

Can we do Sringeri and Horanadu in one day?

Not from Bangalore. It is 330 km one way to Sringeri on hill roads, and Horanadu is a further 60 km of slow road beyond it. Two days is the minimum honest itinerary.

Is monsoon a bad time for this trip?

It is the most beautiful and the least practical. Waterfalls are full and the Malnad is green, but ghat driving is slow, landslips close roads at short notice, and leeches are a genuine problem on foot at Kalasa and Sirimane. October to February is the easier window.

One last thing

This circuit rewards a smaller vehicle. If your group is on the boundary — say fourteen people — consider whether two people can travel separately, because dropping from a 17 seater to a 13 seater Urbania changes the character of the whole drive through the Malnad.
